Indonesia Fast-Tracks Trademark Registrations
Indonesia’s Trademark Office (TMO) has rolled out an accelerated examination process that significantly shortens the registration timeline. Under this system, applicants can now expect smooth registrations to complete in approximately 6 months. This marks a major improvement from the previous average of up to 12 months.
We have analysed previous filings and observed that applications filed in December 2024 were registered by June 2025, which is consistent with this news. Although no formal regulations or guidance has been issued, the TMO appears to be consistently streamlining its processes.
While the faster timeline benefits straightforward applications, it may pose challenges for more nuanced cases:
- Incomplete Review – Responses to provisional refusals may receive limited attention at the re-examination stage, as examiners prioritize first substantive examinations to hit targets.
- Informal Oppositions – Late informal oppositions filed after the publication period, including for any potential bad faith applications, may no longer be considered if first substantive examination results have already been issued.
To accommodate these changes effectively, trademark owners should update watching arrangements and closely monitor the status of pending applications.
