Gunawan brings decades of practical experience in protecting and enforcing intellectual property rights in Indonesia, spanning both contentious and non-contentious trademark and patent matters, together with strong connections within the Directorate General of Intellectual Property of Indonesia (DGIP). He led the trademark anti-counterfeiting division at Oei Tat Hway Patents & Trade Marks before founding Suryomurcito & Co in 1997, later the Indonesian associate firm of the Rouse network. WTR 1000 ranks him a Luminary for his enforcement and IP protection work, IP Stars recognises him as a Notable Practitioner, and Asialaw lists him as an Elite Practitioner. When clients need context on how a rule or requirement in Indonesia’s IP framework came to be, Gunawan is often the person who was in the room when it was written.
Gunawan is a registered Advocate with PERADI, holding a bachelor of laws from the University of Indonesia and a master of laws from Gadjah Mada University, with advanced IP coursework in Indonesia, Europe, and Japan.
In 1989, he was an invited expert at the parliamentary hearing on Indonesia’s draft patent law, with a suggestion of his incorporated into the resulting statute. He is a former President of the Indonesian Intellectual Property Society and now coordinates AKHKI’s internal experts body.
He is also a frequent speaker at IP seminars in Indonesia and abroad. He has provided IP training at the Criminal Investigation Education and Training Centre of the Indonesian National Police (POLRI); served as a resource speaker at the Attorney General’s Office training centre in Jakarta and the Supreme Court’s training centre; and taught in the IP Consultant Training Program.
Personal interests
Outside of work, Gunawan enjoys reading and discussing spiritual and religious matters, particularly Christianity. He is an avid gardener and photographer, and in his free time enjoys listening to The Beatles. He is also a fan of the boxer Muhammad Ali.
